First
Aid Training
In 2006, we ran four Basic
First Aid courses, as well as training scouts to help them gain their first
aid badge.
First
Aid Provision
In
2007, we are booked to cover 73 events so far, but expect this to increase
as the year progresses. It is interesting to note that over the years
we have slightly increased the numbers of events covered, while in 2006
patient numbers decreased, but 999 calls went up. We believe that
this is due to our focus on high impact events such as motor sport, adventure
racing and horse events, which generate an increased risk of serious injury.
Event statistics for the last five years are shown below:

Members'
Training
The closure of the Southern
Ambulance College significantly disrupted our access to extended skills
update training in 2006. Therefore, we have had to source our training
further afield and have chosen Lifeskills
Medical Ltd. in Stafford. They are approved by the Ambulance
Service Institute, HM Forces Career Transition Partnership and provide
the only private IHCD Technician training in the UK.
Hester and Graham completed
their Instructor certificates in Medical Gases Administration and Automated
External Defibrillation in December 2006 with Lifeskills Medical Ltd.
In March 2007, the Ambulance Aiders: Kayleigh, Gillian, Martin, Graham
and Hester qualified as Emergency Medical Technicians.

role as our Medical Advisor. Mr Reddy holds fellowships with both
the Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh and the Faculty of Accident and
Emergency Medicine. His special interests are pre-hospital resuscitation,
trauma scoring, pre-hospital medicine at mass gatherings and pain control
in the emergency department
Members'
Awards 2006
At the AGM the following
awards were presented:
Patient care award to Gillian
for treating the most patients (52) and making the most 999 calls (8).
Service award to Graham for
attending the most first aid events (51).
Fundraising award to Christine
for collecting £600 donations from members.
Child
Protection
In addition to our regular
in-house update training in child protection, in 2006 we registered with
the NSPCC for their modular distance learning Educare programme in “Child
Protection Awareness in Health”. Each member completes four
modular exercises and sends them away for external marking. To date
eight members have completed the course.
